XTERRA TR150 treadmill review

If you’re looking for an affordable treadmill that works just fine, the XTERRA TR150 Fitness treadmill should be at the top of your list. It’s a modest, entry-level treadmill built for home use.

This treadmill focuses on the essentials, so you shouldn’t expect too much. This, of course, is not to say there are no amazing features to enjoy—there are.

But for the most part, a treadmill around $300 is far below the price point for even an average treadmill on discount. It also means, though, that you don’t have to fall for tricky marketing techniques that would sell to you almost the same thing yet bump the price astronomically high because of a couple added fancy accessories that you may not necessarily need and don’t even always deliver as promised. That can be the case with some of the supposed high-end models.

For the XTERRA TR150, what may be found lacking in terms of sophisticated features and multiple accessories can be appreciated in enhanced key features and have also been channeled toward building a stronger and more durable machine that will serve you in the long-term.

These said, if you’re a home user, a beginner-level treadmill user, or a budget-constrained buyer, we recommend this treadmill for you. You may also possibly fall in love with the XTERRA TR150 if you just want a simple and focused workout.

Regardless of which station you fall under, we believe you will find our review of the XTERRA TR150 Treadmill very helpful as you explore your buying options.

Adding to the size advantage is the spacious 50” L x 16” W running surface which provides enough legroom so that you can perform at any level without worrying about the risk of a nasty fall from a misstep. Going further, the manufacturers used the unique XTRASoft Cushioned Deck technology to reduce impact, protect your joints, and offer a real road feel.

Get instant feedback while you’re at it with the large 5-inch LCD monitor, which displays workout stats for speed, distance, time, calories, and pulse. Speaking of the pulse, it can be tracked by using the heart rate chest strap (not included) and the EKG pulse grip (included) built into the side handlebar.

Treadmill’s Key Features

Frame construction

As a home treadmill, especially for beginners, the XTERRA Fitness TR150 is expectedly not on the largest of sizes or the heaviest of weight capacities. But with dimensions 63.4” L x 28.75” W x 51.4” H, net weight 97 lbs (44 kg), and max user weight 250 lbs (113 kg), the figures are impressive, mathematically and functionally speaking.  But we must agree that we have here is pretty solid gym equipment.

The unit provides enough deck space with a length of 50 inches and a width of 16 inches. With such a vast running surface, you can perform your best run, sprint, jog, or walk and at any intensity, without breaking down.

There are 3 levels of incline, adjustable at different degrees to challenge your body to the max. At a point during your workout, you should feel your heart rate rising and your thighs singing. Don’t worry, these are good signs your body is pushing toward the goal unless there is a distinct discomfort at which point you must stop.

With a solid steel tubing and high-density ABS plastic parts (side rail covers, motor, and console), the treadmill is strong and durable.

Cosmetically speaking, the TR150 is a beautiful treadmill designed with a minimalist touch. The color used is black, and that’s the only available hue for this treadmill. All steel parts are covered with an anti-corrosive paint finish to further promote the long-term integrity of this treadmill.

The unit comes partially assembled, so you will have to fix the remaining parts yourself. With the included assembly toolkit and DIY manual, the job should take about 20-30 minutes.

Fully assembled, the bike weighs 97 lbs (44 kg) and is ready to use.

Cushioning

The treadmill uses the XTRASoft Cushioned Deck technology, which is a 3-layer pad system designed to reduce vibration, absorb shock, and suppress noise. These ensure that your joints are protected from high-impact and your environment is conducive to others, so that can worry less and workout more safely and comfortably.

Powerful incline

In addition to the speed adjustment, the treadmill’s deck can be set to a higher incline during workouts for an extra challenge. There are 3 manual incline settings to allow for workout varieties.

Incline ranges are not much, with each level at approximately 0.5°, 1°, but they will still give you enough challenge to feel the grind.

To set the deck to any slope, locate the adjustable rear stabilizers and pull the knob to release the deck, to lock to the desired incline, or to fold/unfold.

Strong motor & adjustable speed

The XTERRA TR150 is powered by a 2.25 HP motor, making it suitable for running, sprinting, jogging, and walking. The motor isn’t one of the most powerful drive systems, but it still handles well any reasonable level of pressure you throw at it, from long jogging sessions to full speedrunning.

XTERRA TR150 Treadmill Powerful 2.25HP Motor

The treadmill has an impressive speed range, 0.5-10 mph, which adapts to any level of intensity you wish to go at. You will find speed quick adjustment buttons identified by 1 MPH up to 9 MPH. There are small in-between increments of 0.1 MPH to make the progression smooth and seamless.

Another bonus, the treadmill’s motor saves a great deal of energy with its minimal power consumption rate. This means that you will not have to pay anything bugging as a result of accrued electricity bill from a treadmill, not even if you use it every day.

Additionally, the motor doesn’t generate enough noise to worry about.

Heart rate tracking

The treadmill uses a 2-way heart rate monitoring system: the EKG hand pulse grip sensors and the heart rate chest strap, to help you stay right on track and achieve your goals quicker.

The hand-grips sensors are attached to the side handlebars where you can take automatic pulse readings simply by placing your hand on the active area of the handlebar. The readings are displayed on the digital console’s LCD screen, along with your other workout information.

XTERRA TR150 Treadmill Direct Access Speed Keys

As for the heart rate chest strap, it’s not included in your purchase but works well with the unit. You can easily get a good one at a small cost in any fitness or health store.

Console & programs

The 5-inch LCD monitor gives feedback on your workout stats so that you can track your distance, time, speed, calories, and pulse. The display is bold and crisp, but the screen is not back-lit, so you should be ready to use extra lighting in dim settings.

Integrated into the console are a book rack and an accessories holder, which keeps your items (magazine, smartphone, iPad, remote control, water bottle, among others) close by, where you can easily reach them without breaking sequence.

Spice up your workout with a variety of 12 preset workout programs (P1-P12), which are a welcome addition to the manual program. By default, each program works on a 30-minute duration, but you can customize a program’s lapse to preference.

Folding design & SpaceSaver

The XTERRA TR150 is an average-size treadmill, but it’s still large enough to give a comfortable workout while saving you some room space. With a 28.5” L x 28.75” W x 61” H folding dimension, the treadmill’s size can be reduced further to save extra space when not in use.

Front transport wheels help you move the bulk from room to room. But we suggest that you find a dedicated space for your treadmill.

Final Words

As we have seen, the XTERRA TR150 is an entry-level treadmill for home use. It’s a modest machine that promises little but delivers big.

Yes, there isn’t much to see in terms of internet-optimized engagements and fancy accessories. But this is expected in a treadmill at the lowest price point in the market.

However, like has already been stated, these elements have been made up for in the form of enhanced features and performance. And while the machine has stuck to the essentials, for the most part, a few extras have been included, such as the EKG hand pulse grip sensors, a compatible chest strap for a pulse, a 5-inch LCD monitor, and an accessory holder.

The unit has been developed to accommodate any form of treadmill workout: Running, sprinting, jogging, and walking, making it easily accessible to a large market.
